Fringe’s series of double love portraits, of Donald & Daffy Duck, and Charlie Brown with Snoopy for example, make universal statements about cohesion in a fractured world. The paintings are messages of reassurance, given that the characters are so familiar, and their friendships are some of the most iconic love stories on earth. Added to the familiarity is the recurring theme of love as a fabrication of street art, expressed through spray-can hearts as a matrix. The work is joyfully precious, imagining successful cartoon characters that are like commodified brands in the world of commercial art.
Fringe Biography
He gave up a corporate salary to paint. Fourteen shows later, nobody's laughing.Born in the late 1970s, Fringe traded a title, a ladder, and a ceiling for oil paint and bronze — a decision vindicated by a devoted following spanning Johannesburg, Vienna, Dubai, and the United States. His work — oil on canvas, bronze, ceramic, stone — fuses commercial iconography with a visual language entirely his own. Recurring characters Gutinke, Mylo, Nova, and Quiet Boy each speak a different emotional dialect, united by hope, self-discovery, and unmistakable identity.
