The opposite of great art is not bad art
The opposite of great art is not bad art. It’s small art, which is not a reflection of its size, but a reflection on its reach. Great art sends a tremor through the ages — but small art makes gorgeous little ripples in small circles.
I know someone who went to the Museum of Bad Art in Boston (museumofbadart.org) and it blew her mind. It’s about art that never made it to any commercial gallery. She suddenly understood that everyday people get their art supplies from the same place they get their vegetables and headache pills. And that’s also where they get their inspiration.
The happiest ones keep dreaming & creating. They make birthday cards for their kids — small ripples give them pure enjoyment.
Others become famous, but find purpose in collective misery. Every cloud has a dull grey lining. And then the art turns out to be the same colour.
Art should breathe not suffocate. A moment in the gallery = a moment on a nebuliser.
