Snap, Crackle and Pop

Snap, Crackle and Pop

Snap, Crackle and Pop are like the poor relations of the cartoon world. Only they made millions of kids smile at dawn, even though they kind of went nowhere in life. What happened on the breakfast table stayed on the breakfast table.

But they definitely made that pivotal hour of the day more bearable. They’ve taken us from our nests to the big wide world in less than an hour, for almost a century. Kudos to them.

These little guys arrived on the Rice Krispies box in 1933, which means your great granny probably thought they were real, when she was grabbing a bowl before school.

I must say I really thought they were in the cast of Snow White — I had to be told they came from somewhere else. I guess it was one of the first moments in my pop culture life when I realised that all these little friends aren’t friends at all. It made me sad.

The point is, that Snap, Crackle and Pop weren’t always little boys. They started out as very old men until some marketing heads in the late 1940s realised that youth sells more than wisdom. And so Snap, Crackle and Pop went backwards in time.

It’s the history they don’t teach in school. Perhaps someday they’ll start a new subject for matric called the History of Breakfast.
