Stress shall free me

Stress shall free me

When you hit the drive-thru the first thing you get is a little thrill when you see the backlit menu with its packaged meals. The next thing you get to do, as you drive-out, is compare your meal to the menu.

It’s the same with Tinder, when you swipe through that pack of faces that are supposedly available. And then, when the meeting happens, I guess you compare the reality with the menu, once again.

Does the meal fit the menu?

You just cannot ask the people at the hatch, at Burger King, if you’re going to get what you saw. Likewise, you just can’t ask the person in a Tinder chat if they really look like their profile pic. It’s amazing how this new-century etiquette functions, because I still expect a whole lot of businesses, and even friends, to deliver on promises.

Addicts that I’ve met are exactly the same, and they will tell you that they demand party drugs to be exactly that, from their dealers. The difference is that they cannot ask for their money back, once they’ve discovered that they’ve been taken for a ride.

In the drive-thru last week, I had an anxiety attack because the queue was far too long. And there’s a festive atmosphere when you are stuck between two cars playing loud music, with conflicting beats, that works against one’s appetite. Personally I cannot do noise and food.

I found in a frame shop, where wood was being cut with an electric saw, that noise on its own can be very pleasant when you know it’s in the service of your own creation. If someone screams, ‘look there,’ above the hugest roar of a jet flying by, then you can appreciate the noise because you understand that it’s the result of human achievement.

What I’ve noticed is that stress becomes bearable if you can explain to yourself why it’s there. Otherwise it’s just stress for its own sake, and that’s a dark place to be.
