I am a world changer.
I am a world changer. I wrote that on a cap and started to believe in myself again.
It’s useful to know that you can write yourself a message in your artwork, to motivate yourself, and others can be motivated too. I am a world changer simply because I say so. It’s what you’re going to tell yourself.
Sewer rats are really called Norwegian rats and they have nothing to do with Norway. They originated in China,
and have filled the planet with their distinctive little dirty dance. On their journey they stopped off in Norway, where they got their name.
So sewer rats are definitely world changers. If they were bad humans they would be proud that they populated the earth and inspired fear and awe. They are stars of their own show. I know it sounds dodgy, but you have to admire their ability to travel, find accommodation and feed their young.
I don’t want to humanise rats, even though I’ve given plenty of creatures human values in my pictures. But rats just aren’t my subject. They bring space down to something basic and make one feel vengeful, when they just strive to survive.
We all share the planet, and there are so many different dramas, that the days are frightening enough without having to consider rats as other humans, with tails.
As winter comes they scratch around in the roof preparing to keep warm. They seek out a piece of real estate where the babies can grow. They come down at night and nibble on the leftovers. They’re a lot like us, only a little less greedy.
